Why Tallow? The Oldest Skincare Ingredient, Explained

Long before skincare aisles, serums and ten-step routines, people cared for their skin with what they had. One of the most trusted ingredients was tallow. At SknStudio, it's the first ingredient in almost everything we make, and here's why.

What is tallow?

Tallow is rendered animal fat. At SknStudio we use bone tallow, which we render by hand and purify slowly until it's clean, smooth and ready for skin. The result is a rich, creamy base that we blend in small batches with carefully chosen butters, oils and botanicals.

Why it works so well on skin

Your skin makes its own oils to stay soft and protected. Tallow is made up of fats that are naturally similar to the ones your skin produces, which is why it feels so familiar on the skin. It's rich without feeling foreign, and a little goes a long way.

Tallow also naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. We add extra vitamin E to many of our formulas for even more nourishment.

Less, but better

Because tallow does so much on its own, our formulas don't need long ingredient lists. Every ingredient in a SknStudio jar has a job, from shea and cocoa butter for richness to jojoba and castor oil for glide. You can see the full ingredient list on every product page.

Does it smell like tallow?

No. Our tallow is carefully purified, and each product is scented with natural ingredients. Our Face Cream has warm notes of frankincense and vanilla, while our body care comes in two signature scents: Japanese Blossom and Sexy Colombian.

Where to start

  • Face Cream: a rich everyday moisturizer for all skin types
  • Body Butter: head-to-toe nourishment in your favourite scent
  • Hair Mask: deep care for dry, damaged hair

New to tallow? Try a small amount first. We always recommend a patch test on your inner arm before your first full use.
