Shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil… plant butters are everywhere in skincare, and for good reason. So why do we put tallow first? The answer isn't "tallow or plants". It's how they work together.
What plant butters do well
Plant butters like shea and cocoa are rich, creamy and lovely on the skin. They add softness, texture and glide, which makes a balm feel pleasant to apply. That's why you'll find shea butter and cocoa butter in many of our formulas too.
What makes tallow different
Tallow comes from animal fat, and its fats are naturally similar to the oils your own skin makes. This is why tallow feels so familiar on the skin: rich and nourishing, without feeling foreign. It also naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K.
In short, plant butters bring texture and richness, while tallow brings a base your skin already recognises.
Why we use both
We start with tallow, then add plant butters and oils where they make the formula better:
- Shea butter for extra creaminess
- Cocoa butter for a rich, firm texture
- Jojoba and castor oil for smooth glide
- Beeswax to hold everything together
Every ingredient has a job. Nothing is there just to fill the jar. That's what we mean by less, but better.
Is tallow right for me?
Our products are made for all skin types, and many people with dry or sensitive skin love tallow. Every skin is different, though, so we always recommend a patch test first: apply a little to your inner arm and wait 24 hours.
Please note: because they contain tallow and beeswax, our products are not vegan. They are cruelty-free and never tested on animals.
